The Church of the Highest Common Denominator

 bible reading

“A church of the highest common denominator is a church where the word of God is preached.  It is a church where the word of God is taught.  It is a place where the promises that God makes in his word are trusted and diligently sought.  The church of the highest common denominator is a church where the minister is not an entertainer but a preacher.  He is not a motivator, but a man of prayer.  He is not a manager, but a student of God’s word.  The members of such a church likewise attend to the word.  They read it, they learn it, and they teach it to their children.”

–excerpted from The Church of the Highest Common Denominator

Unfortunately, this isn’t what most modern (or should I say post-modern?)  churches are like today.   They’re more like “the church of the least common denominator” described in the article.  By the way, the article talks specifically about Reformed churches (since it’s on a Reformed website) but I think the points apply equally to any Bible believing — or dare I say “fundamentalist”? — church, regardless of doctrinal persuasion.
